I have mentioned on my blog that I have been pretty sick the last couple months. I have had stomach issues in the past, but they kinda were just manageable. I got really sick really fast about two or three months ago. And it didn't go away this time. I have lost 20-25lbs without trying. I only ate about one full meal a day and even that would upset my stomach. It has been horrible.
I had a serious test run last week. I was originally really discouraged because they didn't find anything wrong. They ran more tests and just yesterday I found out that my body does not possess the protein needed to digest lactose. It is also lacking the protein to digest starch found in potatoes, bread and pasta. I also have minor stomach acid issues I am now on meds for.
The lactose issue is the main one. The doctor said that I would not get better by just adding lactose medications, but that I needed to take lactose out of my diet as much as possible and take the pills when I couldn't be absolutely sure that what I was eating had no lactose in it. The starch issue is less serious. I was told to limit how much I eat, but that I didn't need to completely take it out of my diet. There is also a med to help with that.
It is going to be a crazy adjustment for me. I eat dairy with every meal. I love cheese. I love milk. I mean, I live in Wisconsin for goodness sakes! I am going to start blogging a little bit on this issue, maybe every couple weeks. It may be a little more often to start as I adjust to these changes and laugh my way through the somewhat sad looking world of lactose intolerance.
If any of you, my lovely readers, have this issue or know other bloggers who do...I would love getting your advice or connections to resources. I would also love your prayers. This is going to be quite the process and adjustment for me, but it is something I know I need to do because I want to get better. I don't want to be sick anymore!! Thank you so much. :)
